"Last Jews of Calcutta" I have often wondered what it feels like to witness a community slowly disappear and when everyone is gone, what happens to that culture. The Last Jews of Calcutta is a result of such an exploration using photographs and recorded oral histories of certain members of that community. I was born in a Hindu family in Calcutta (now Kolkata) and despite living there until my early teens, I was largely unaware of the once thriving "Baghdadi" Jewish community, who came as traders in the late 18th century, settled in a cosmopolitan urban environment, met no prejudice, and excelled in all spheres of endeavor. Once around 4,000 strong, just over 20 Jews remain today, and the best hope for keeping the memory of Calcutta's Jews lies (surprisingly) in the hands of the Muslim caretakers of its synagogues and the Hindu teachers at the Jewish schools.
