Thomas Devaux

"The Shoppers"   (Work in progress)    Portrait of shoppers in a supermarket...  After the highly acclaimed ATTRITION series, which brought near-overnight success both in the Paris art world and internationally, Thomas Devaux is developing a second one titled,THE SHOPPERS. Its approach is more real-to-life, but still nonetheless washed in a state of grace.   These portraits are of mixed and everyday people as they wait in line at the supermarket. The facial expressions are empty. Their heads held down in nothingness or contemplation as they seek to reclaim a part of themselves.   The poor image of these people who are resounded to paying is decontextualized and disconnected from its own reality by Thomas Devaux’s characteristic black and white treatment. It results in them being elevated and becoming modern icons.   Photography oscillates between sketches, drawing and painting and therefore creating a fascination with large format. The psychological dimension is as rich for the artist as are protocol implemented and mannered aesthetics. Thomas Devaux
